TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION

Automotive Service Excellence

Until the early 1970s, consumers had no way to distinguish between incompetent and competent mechanics. In response to this need, the independent, non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) was established in 1972.

ASE's mission is to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service through the testing and certification of repair and service professionals.

At present there are over 420,000 professionals with current certifications. They work in every segment of the automotive service industry: car and truck dealerships, independent garages, fleets, service stations, franchises, and more.

Here's how ASE certification works: Prospective candidates register for and take one or more of ASE's 40-plus exams. The tests are grouped into specialties for automobile, medium/heavy truck, truck equipment, school bus, and collision repair technicians as well as engine machinists, alternate fuels technicians, parts specialists, collision damage estimators and auto service consultants.

Upon passing at least one exam and after providing proof of two years of relevant work experience, the test taker becomes ASE certified. Certification, however, is not for life. To remain certified, those with ASE credentials must be retested every five years.

The tests, which are conducted twice a year at over 700 locations around the country, are administered by ACT, known for its academic and occupational testing programs. The exams stress knowledge of job-related skills. They are no cinch to pass; approximately one out of three test takers fails.

Consumers benefit from ASE certification. It is a valuable yardstick by which to measure the knowledge and skills of individual technicians as well as the commitment to quality of the repair facility employing ASE-certified professionals.

ASE-certified professionals usually wear blue and white ASE insignia and carry credentials listing their exact area(s) of expertise (brakes, engine repair, etc.), while employers often display their technicians' credentials in the customer waiting area.

Consumers should look for facilities that display the ASE Blue Seal of Excellence© logo.

The tailgate lift support was not working in my wife's 2005 Envoy. I called Viking and they were able to get the part immediately and got her right in the next day. She went and they replaced the supports on both sides of the tailgate in less than an hour while she waited. The tailgate now works properly and my wife was extremely pleased with the courtesy and quick service provided. We would recommend Viking to anyone needing repairs done to their automobile. We've had other work done on vehicles and have always been pleased with the work done by this shop.

Had A/C issues that after 2 trips to the dealer were not resolved. I went to Vikings and in 24 hours had the A/C running colder than it has been in years. Great job done in a extremely timely manner. Thanks Tom

I brought my 2011 Honda Accord into the shop for an electrical analysis to validate I had a couple of failed actuators in the rear doors. I spoke with Harry who got out from behind the desk and came with me to the car to "take a look." Harry gave me a detailed plan of how they would determine what was wrong and I agreed to them delving into the problem. Harry asked when completing the service order, "How did you find out about our business?" I explained that I had performed a Google search and what separated Viking Auto Repair Electric and Air from the rest was Harry personally responded to each comment put on Google. With this level of customer interface, I thought I could not go wrong. This is a type of customer service rarely found. The repair was made (it was actually failed actuators on both rear doors) and the car is back 100% operational now. Car service businesses are everyone when you Google them, ones that provide this level of customer service are hard to find. Highly recommend if you have a car electrical issue. I did not have any air conditioning work done, however, I would presume the same level of expertise is there for A/C issues. Look no farther, this is your solution to electrical problems!
